## Customers don't tell you when they leave

A customer who stops coming doesn't say goodbye. One day they just don't come back: they found a closer place, a deal somewhere else, or they simply forgot about you. For a local business, every one of those customers is revenue you had already earned, slipping away quietly.

The problem is that most businesses only notice when sales drop, and by then it's too late to win those customers back one by one.

## What the numbers say

Harvard Business Review sums it up in two figures:

- **Winning a new customer costs 5 to 25 times more** than keeping one you already have. The range depends on the study and the industry, but the direction is clear.
- **Raising retention by just 5% can increase profits by 25% to 95%**, according to research by Frederick Reichheld at Bain & Company.

A customer who comes back doesn't need you to pay for ads to see them again. Over time, they also tend to try more of what you offer and recommend you to others.

## Why loyalty is a competitive edge

Your competitors can drop their prices or copy your menu. What they can't copy is your relationship with your customers:

1. **A reason to choose you.** If your customer is 3 of 5 visits into a reward, switching to another place costs them their progress.
2. **Information only you have.** Knowing who comes, how often, and who stopped coming lets you act before anyone else.
3. **Getting there in time.** Inviting a customer back while they're just starting to drift works far better than trying to win them back months later.

## What you can do today

- **Offer a clear, reachable reward.** "Your 5th visit is free" is understood in a second.
- **Keep track of your regulars.** Even a spreadsheet works: note who comes and how often.
- **Ask for permission to contact them.** Email or WhatsApp only works if the customer agreed to receive messages. Ask separately from your program terms.
- **Reach out when someone is slow to return.** A personal message with an incentive ("your next visit counts double this week") can be enough.

## How Relowme does it

Relowme automates that loop: customers save their rewards card in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, your staff adds visits or points with a scan, and AI spots when someone is taking longer than usual to return so it can send the right campaign, always with their permission.
